March 23rd, 2021 – Since launching the project in September 2020, the Switch Garment team has signed up 19 garment factories to participate in the first stage of the project, whereby they will receive free energy audits. The 19 participating factories make up the first batch to join the project, with more factories signed up to receive energy audits in the next round.

In response to the COVID-19 restrictions in Cambodia, outreach to factories has been conducted both virtually and in-person by the Switch Garment team, which includes specialists from the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), ហ្គេស (Group for the Environment, Renewable Energy and Solidarity), and the សមាគមរោងចក្រកាត់ដេរនៅកម្ពុជា (GMAC). The team has connected with factory management and technicians to understand their needs and communicate the benefits of adopting sustainable energy practices.

The Switch Garment team meets with factories across Cambodia

By offering free energy audits to factories, Switch Garment can identify ways for factories to reduce operational costs through improved energy productivity, but also use sustainable energy practices to deliver outcomes that are strategic to the enterprise’s core business. Energy links to everything in a factory’s operation and can be used as an instrument to also deliver high-value outcomes in areas that include productivity improvements, enhanced quality control, and higher performance on buyer-recognised sustainability benchmarks. Factory energy audits will also inform the strategy for the development of future technical extension services and knowledge products that will strengthen the competitiveness of the Cambodian garment sector.
