Garment factories join a workshop on reducing pollution through better boiler management
On 8th June, the Switch Garment consortium, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) hosted the third session of the Sustainability Performance Workshop series. 130 participants attended the session, around 70% of which represented garment factories. The webinar focused on clean and efficient boiler operation in garment factories, a key energy challenge for the sector. Joining the discussion were two major boiler and steam system equipment suppliers, UNDP Cambodia, Geres and an independent expert.
Leif Holmberg, Climate Change and Environmental Policy Specialist from UNDP, discussed the risks, opportunities and challenges with waste-to-energy boilers for garment factories, sharing the major findings of a study conducted by UNDP and the Ministry of Environment. Mr. Holmberg stated that, with the correct operation, waste-to-energy boilers can save money and have a positive environmental impact. Representing boiler manufacturer Thermax, Country Head Dushyant Tiwari, and Technical Advisor Shailesh Shinde, outlined different ways that factories could save energy through better boiler management. Thermax also explored how the industrial internet of things can further improve boiler efficiency and management. Exploring how factories can reduce risks and emissions, Aude Petelot, Regional Technical Advisor from Geres, spoke about pollutants from combustion in garment factory boilers. View the full presentation here: Geres- Reducing Harmful Effluents from Combustion in Boilers in Cambodia.
Pierre-Marc Blanchet, an independent expert on industrial energy, provided a series of eight energy-saving possibilities for boiler operation. Mr. Blanchet underlined that boilers are not isolated but part of the heat production system, hence, energy efficiency must consider the whole system, not just the boiler. William Hein, Regional Sales Manager of Spirax Sarco, focused on steam and how to efficiently manage steam production and use. Mr. Hein emphasised the importance of 1) keeping in the heat, through good design and installation as well as efficient insulation; 2) keeping in the steam through better curing leaks and monitoring steam trap operation; 3) keeping in the water through appropriate condensate recovery. The previous session of the Sustainability Performance series on rooftop solar PV, in collaboration with GIZ, also attracted more than 130 participants, from factories and technology suppliers.
